Vapi is a configurable platform for teams building AI voice agents for phone and web interactions. It’s best suited to technical teams that need to connect conversational agents to telephony, APIs, and business workflows, and can own configuration, testing, and downstream validation.

What is Vapi?

Vapi is a developer platform for building and operating conversational voice agents for phone calls and embedded web voice interfaces. Each assistant combines speech-to-text, a language model, and text-to-speech, with a choice of providers. The platform also includes telephony, tools, orchestration, testing, and operational records.

Conversation design and orchestration

Assistants use system prompts, tools, and structured outputs. Squads coordinate specialized assistants and can preserve context during transfers. Knowledge bases can be searched during calls through the Query tool, while multilingual behavior depends on the chosen transcription provider and configuration.

Calls, tools, and handoffs

Vapi supports inbound and outbound calling, API requests, customer-hosted function webhooks, client-side browser tools, SMS, DTMF, and MCP tools. Transfer Call supports PSTN and SIP destinations, including blind, warm, dynamic, and assistant-based warm transfers. A forwarded-call completion reason confirms initiation of a transfer, not completion by the downstream telephony provider.

Testing, observability, and controls

Evals cover point-in-conversation decisions and tool arguments; simulations cover end-to-end conversations, recovery behavior, and handoffs. Operational features include recordings, transcripts, logs, SIP PCAPs, post-call summaries, scorecards, server events, and monitoring alerts. Evals do not test audio quality, speech recognition, or turn-taking, and simulated callers cannot fully represent real-world conditions.

Who Vapi fits

Vapi suits developers, technical teams, and operations teams that need a configurable voice layer connected to their own services. It is well aligned for support and routing, qualification, reminders, scheduling, embedded voice, and multi-agent routing. Buyers should be prepared to configure prompts, models, tools, telephony, and compliance controls rather than expect a fully managed contact center deployment.

Buyer scenarios

Where the product fits — and where to be careful

Technical teams building custom voice workflows

Need
A configurable voice layer for support, scheduling, qualification, routing, or embedded product experiences.
Why it fits
Vapi provides selectable providers, phone and web channels, tools, structured outputs, knowledge retrieval, and context-preserving transfers.
Watch out
Teams are responsible for configuring prompts, models, tools, telephony, and validating sensitive inputs and downstream actions.

Strong fit

Operations teams connecting calls to business systems

Need
Automate call routing and connect voice interactions to CRM or back-office workflows.
Why it fits
It supports inbound and outbound calls, PSTN and SIP transfers, API requests, webhooks, and prebuilt workflow options.
Watch out
It is less suitable for buyers expecting a fully managed contact-center operation or turnkey industry workflow without technical capacity.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Configurable speech, model, and voice-provider choices for custom voice workflows.
  • Broad calling, tool, API, webhook, and transfer capabilities.
  • Strong testing and operational toolkit, including Evals, Simulations, recordings, transcripts, and scorecards.
  • Public usage-based pricing with published tiers, limits, and add-ons.

Cons

  • API- and webhook-oriented implementation places configuration and validation responsibilities on the customer.
  • Simulation and evaluation results do not cover every real-world audio condition or independently prove external actions completed.
  • Provider and telephony costs sit alongside the Vapi hosting fee, making total cost workload-dependent.
