HeyGen is a business-focused AI video platform built around talking avatars, synthetic voices, localization, and prompt-led video assembly. Its breadth stands out: users can start from a script, prompt, URL, image, audio file, PDF, or source video, then refine the result in AI Studio. It is particularly compelling for marketing, sales, training, and multilingual video teams; creators who need detailed cinematic shot control or HDR delivery will run into notable limitations.

What is HeyGen?

HeyGen is a cloud-based AI video platform centered on talking avatars, synthetic voices, video translation and localization, and prompt-led video assembly. A typical project starts with an avatar, script, and voice to create a presenter video; Video Agent can also assemble a draft from an idea or instructions.

It’s best suited for business-oriented presenter videos and localization, while also supporting prompt-led and cinematic video functions. Starting points include scripts, images, templates, PPT or PDF files, avatars, prompts, and uploaded videos for translation.

Generation capabilities

HeyGen’s core generation workflow is avatar-led video: select an avatar, add a script and voice, and render a video. Free access includes more than 500 stock video avatars, one custom video avatar, and Avatar 4 access.

Video Agent can build a draft with a script, scene visuals, narration, and overall video structure from prompts or detailed inputs such as media, logos, documents, pacing, and scene instructions. It also supports optional Seedance cinematic visuals. Video Translation accepts common video files, HeyGen projects, YouTube URLs, and Google Drive links, and can translate into up to 10 target languages in a single job.

Creative control

HeyGen provides controls across avatar performance, voice delivery, scripts, scenes, media, layout, timing, transitions, captions, branding, and translation. Avatar IV accepts free-text motion prompts, while Avatar V adds expression, gesture, and gaze presets. Direct Voice controls tone, pacing, and emotional delivery line by line, and Voice Mirror maps a recorded performance onto an avatar voice.

AI Studio supports post-draft refinement, and paid users can build Brand Systems with brand assets. Limits matter: custom motion cannot direct camera movement, location, props, walking, backgrounds, or lighting; it has a 10-second maximum. Avatar Shots cannot be edited after generation.

Output and workflow

HeyGen supports a browser-based workflow from prompt, script, image, document, or source video through planning, generation, editing, export, sharing, localization, and automation. Video Agent lets users revise a Video Plan before generation and continue refining it in AI Studio.

Paid users can download video, audio-only files, and SRT captions, with 720p, 1080p, and 4K output on eligible plans. Business adds collaboration, SAML/SSO, SCORM export, LMS integrations, and connections including n8n, Make, HubSpot, and Zapier. Output remains subject to plan duration, resolution, credits, and feature-specific credit use; HDR is not supported.

Who should buy HeyGen?

HeyGen is a strong fit for marketing, sales, product, training, L&D, e-learning, localization, and operations teams that need avatar presenter videos, multilingual campaigns, explainers, personalized outreach, or training content. Creator also suits solo users who want prompt-led YouTube, TikTok, UGC, or explainer production.

It’s less suitable for detailed shot-level cinematography, precise camera path control, persistent character or action control, and fully editable cinematic clips. Buyers who require HDR delivery, guaranteed translation accuracy, or automatic translation of baked-in graphic text should consider those limits carefully.
