Wix is a broad, hosted website platform for self-creators, small businesses, and professional teams. It pairs AI-assisted and template-led site creation with visual editing, a CMS, forms, commerce, bookings, and managed hosting. Its main trade-off is architectural: Wix sites stay on Wix hosting, so the complete site cannot be exported to an independent host.

What is Wix?

Wix is a SaaS visual website and landing-page builder for creating and managing a web presence. Its product range combines AI generation, templates, visual editing, managed hosting, domains, CMS-backed content, forms, commerce, scheduling, and SEO. Wix Studio, Velo, and Headless extend the platform for professional and technical workflows.

Site creation and design control

Wix can generate a business-ready site from a conversational description, then lets users refine layouts, copy, visuals, fonts, colors, and styling with drag-and-drop controls. More than 2,000 templates offer another starting point. Wix Studio adds custom breakpoints, grids, Flexbox controls, animations, CSS overrides, and code options, while Velo provides a serverless environment for custom sites and web applications.

Custom code snippets have limits: they cannot directly interact with Wix page elements, Wix APIs, collections, backend methods, or native business applications.

Site features and business tools

Wix includes a CMS with content collections, dynamic pages, permissions, backups, Data API access, and CSV import and export. Forms can be managed in the dashboard and exported as CSV. Built-in capabilities cover stores, payments, bookings, events, subscriptions, memberships, scheduling, marketing, and SEO, while the App Market adds hundreds of Wix-made and third-party integrations.

The Accessibility Wizard identifies some issues and suggests fixes, but it does not scan every part of a site or establish complete accessibility compliance.

Hosting, domains and portability

Wix provides managed hosting, CDN delivery, automated updates, and options to buy, connect, or transfer a domain. A paid Premium plan is required to connect a custom domain and remove Wix branding. Wix Headless lets you connect Wix business services and CMS functions to an external frontend.

Portability is the central trade-off: a functioning Wix site must remain on Wix servers and cannot be exported for independent hosting. CMS collections and form submissions can be exported as CSV files, but the rendered site, design, codebase, and application behavior do not transfer.

Who Wix suits

Wix is ideal for individuals and small businesses that want to build a portfolio, blog, service site, or small online store without starting from code. Agencies, designers, and professional teams can use Wix Studio for responsive design, collaboration, and client work. Developers can use Velo, APIs, and Headless for more custom implementations.

It is not a fit for buyers who require a downloadable, independently hostable version of the full site. Buyers with strict accessibility requirements should validate the complete site rather than relying on the Accessibility Wizard alone.

Buyer scenarios

Where the product fits — and where to be careful

Self-creators and small businesses

Need
Launch and run a professional web presence without starting from code.
Why it fits
AI generation, templates, visual editing, hosting and built-in business tools provide a broad hosted starting point for portfolios, blogs, service sites and small stores.
Watch out
A paid plan is needed for a custom domain and to remove Wix branding, and the complete site cannot be moved to independent hosting.

Strong fit

Agencies and technical teams

Need
Deliver more customized client sites or connect Wix services to technical workflows.
Why it fits
Wix Studio adds responsive controls, collaboration, project and client management, code options and advanced design controls; Velo, APIs and Headless extend technical workflows.
Watch out
Headless is a separate architecture, not a way to export a Wix-built site; do not rely on the Accessibility Wizard alone for complete compliance.

Good fit when a Wix-based architecture is acceptable
